Safety alert: Gas cartridge stoves pose hidden dangers
Recently, several people suffered explosions when using gas cartridge stoves in mainland China.
Gas cartridge stoves, also known as portable butane gas stoves, are non-fixed cooking appliances that use filled butane gas as the main gas (liquefied petroleum gas and other gases can also be used as fuel for use) and are heated directly by fire.
Gas cartridge stoves are lightweight and portable, can be used for hot pot, barbecue, and grilled fish, and are common in outdoor camping and dining establishments.
However, once used improperly, it can be quite destructive.
In Guilin, Guangxi Province, video footage from a restaurant shows a table of guests sitting around a table when the gas cartridge stove suddenly exploded, sending chopsticks and dishes flying off the table.
In Bijie, Guizhou, a gas cartridge stove suddenly exploded, and instantly disintegrated the iron pot, everyone scattered and fled, but fortunately, no one was injured.
In Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, a large amount of smoke and explosions burned at the scene of a hot pot store. It is understood that the fire room stored dozens of gas cartridge stoves.
To test the cassette stove explosion "power," firefighters had a gas cartridge stove's gas canister cut a small opening of about 2 millimeters. They put it into the stove, simulating the gas canister leakage state. Less than three minutes after the ignition, accompanied by a loud bang, the stove was blown to pieces, and the gas canister flew ten meters away.
Is it so dangerous that a gas cartridge stove can still be used?
Generally speaking, a gas cartridge stove has an overpressure protection device. When the temperature is too high, resulting in excessive pressure, the gas cartridge stove will be forced to eject the gas bottle through the spring-driven door buckle. This device is a mandatory requirement of the national standard and must be installed in cassette stoves.
However, as mechanical firmware, the overpressure protection device has the potential to fail after use. Therefore, whether for home or restaurant use, it is important to check that the overpressure protection device ongas cartridge stoves regularly.
The gas canisters of gas cartridge stoves have a thin body and may be deformed during transportation due to squeezing and collision. Before using the gas canister, be sure to carefully check the surface of the gas canister for damage and leakage. Tilting and inverting the canister is strictly prohibited.
In addition, when using a gas cartridge stove, be sure to keep the gas canister away from the heat source, and do not use pots and pans with a base plate larger than the bottom of the stove. Otherwise, the heat will be transferred to the gas canister through the pots and pans, causing an explosion.
A gas cartridge stove cannot be used in these situations:
❌ Not to be used as a heater or in an airtight situation.
❌ Not to be used in strong or hot winds. Strong winds can blow out the flame, while hot winds can cause an explosion by raising air pressure.
❌ Not to be used near flammable materials or curtains.
❌ Not to be used in the hot sun or near open flames or other heat sources.
