Internet celebrities' speech at UN: A business, rather than an achievement
Discussions are being sparked by the photographs that many internet celebrity bloggers are sharing on social media from the UN headquarters. They are seen in formal attire with makeup, posing under country flagpoles, in conference halls, and pretending to give speeches.
Their captions start with "Today is a day for a meeting at the United Nations," followed by topics like "youth development, international climate change, children, and women's issues."
After the event, the bloggers share videos of themselves having lunch at the UN headquarters, casually chatting with staff while sprinklingin difficult English words. Despite the UN's usual formality, it becomes a casual spot for them. Yet, a closer look reveals a pattern: their UN posts appear to be mass-produced, featuring the same locations, captions, andvideo styles.
Insiders have revealed that the notion of "attending a meeting at the UN" mentioned by internet celebrities can actually be achieved through paid means.
On the UN website, adult tickets cost $26, students 13 and older pay US$18 with ID, children aged 5-12 pay US$15, and seniors 60+ pay US$18. Multilingualguides are available. Bookings are already scheduled until January 2025.
The UN offers paid services for a few hundred dollars, allowing participation in internal and external speeches, online conferences, and more, applying to students, educators, and business leaders.
Training institutionsalso provide a pricey "training group" at nearly 60,000 yuan for tailored research projects and speeches.
All participating United Nations projects are listed on the official website.
