Mable Chan hopes implement transportation infrastructure blueprint through innovation in technology and policy
Secretary for Transport & Logistics Mable Chan stated on a radio program today (Dec. 7) that the main line project of the Northern Link of the MTR has yet to confirm its operating contractor.
"This will depend on the final arrangements and designs implemented next year... The authorities maintain an open attitude, but the MTR is currently exploring innovative approaches with various companies."
Chan mentioned that the main line of the Northern Link is part of the railway, with two stations serving as interchange points within the MTR network. Ensuring convenience for the public is a crucial consideration, although this does not imply a rigid approach.
Furthermore, the Kai Tak Sports Park will conduct another stress test tomorrow with an increased participation of 12,000 individuals, marking the largest scale test to date. Chan expressed that apart from the subway, arrangements for taxis and buses will also be provided to ensure comprehensive support. Recognizing the diverse needs and preferences of spectators and visitors, efforts will be made to accommodate them to the best of available resources.
Regarding the enhancement of taxi services, Chan mentioned that most taxi drivers operate as individuals, making it challenging to facilitate innovation. However, through the introduction of taxi fleets set to be rolled out by the middle of next year, the public will witness the capability of the taxi industry.
"These fleets are actively acquiring new vehicles, including electric and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, with drivers wearing dedicated uniforms," she noted.
Chan also noted that some ride-hailing providers from outside Hong Kong are ambitious about entering the local market, pledging to handle matters with care and actively seek feedback from the industry and the public.
Looking ahead, Chan emphasized the importance of innovation in both technology and policy to implement Hong Kong Major Transport Infrastructure Development Blueprint effectively. With numerous railway projects currently in the planning and construction stages in Hong Kong, efforts will be made to conduct preliminary work and analyze which policies and procedures can progress concurrently. However, she stressed that bypassing procedures is not an option.
