Paris Olympic gold medalists Edgar Cheung and Vivian Kong rank as top fencers in men's foil and women's epee respectively
The International Fencing Federation held its annual meeting and 2024 awards ceremony in Uzbekistan yesterday (Nov. 30). Paris Olympic gold medalists Edgar Cheung Ka-long and Vivian Kong Man-wai rank as the top fencers in men's foil and women's epee, respectively.
During the 2023/24 season, Edgar Cheung won a silver medal at the Istanbul Fencing World Cup in November last year and claimed victories at the FIE Grand Prix in Turin in January and the FIE Foil Grand Prix in Shanghai in May. After successfully defending his title at the Paris Olympics this summer, he surpassed American fencer Nick Itkin to become the year-end world number one in men's foil.
As for Vivian Kong, she delivered outstanding performances in the 2023/24 season, winning gold at the Doha Grand Prix in January and the Barcelona Fencing World Cup in February. She also won a bronze medal at the Budapest Grand Prix in March. In general, she reached the podium in half of her eight international competitions.
