Extraordinary vigour, perseverance make Vivian Kong Olympic champion

Hong Kong athlete Vivian Kong, who won the gold medal in the women's individual fencing competition at the Paris Olympics, is also a learning tyrant. She has always relied on her academic results to get into prestigious schools, and in 2019, she studied for a master's degree at the Renmin University of China. Her instructors praised her for her hard work and self-discipline, and some of her classmates who studied with her in Beijing said that Vivian went to training every day after class.

She attended Beacon Hill School and Sha Tin College. In 2012, she scored 41 points out of 45 in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. She was admitted to Stanford University to study for a bachelor's degree in International Relations with a minor in Psychology.

Waking up at 5 am to do homework.

Being good at both sports and literature is not just a gift. She once recalled that she practiced fencing every day after school, sometimes waking up at 5 am to do her homework. When she traveled abroad for competitions, she used to do her homework on the plane, preferring to sacrifice her time for fun, but also wanting to take care of her studies and fencing simultaneously.

In 2019, she will have to undergo training for the last Olympics. Still, she chose to challenge herself by studying for a Master of Laws degree at Renmin University of China under the tutelage of Professor Mo Yuchuan, who praised her for being very hardworking, self-disciplined; she will eventually finish her master's thesis while training, and graduated in 2021.

A passionate heart for contribution to the community.

After graduating from Renmin University, she entered the Chinese University of Hong Kong in September 2021 as a Juris Doctor (J.D.). Now that she has joined the Hong Kong Jockey Club, she looks forward to participating in charity work.

Grateful for good parents.

Behind every successful person, there is always a key person or even a team, Vivian Kong is no exception, she has a "chef" mum and a "driver" dad.

Former national team member Chen Weijing is the coach of Kong's team, and she has a 20-year mentoring relationship. Chen appreciates the support from Kong's parents for her daughter. During her training in Hong Kong, she was responsible for every meal of her daughter, sometimes even more than three meals daily. Whenever there is a need, Kong's mum would cook immediately, and they never go out to eat. A little-known fact is that Kong's mother even does her daughter's make-up herself.

Some of Kong's classmates who had trained at the same fencing school wrote on social media platforms that every time, they saw Kong's father driving Kong to the training center until she finished the class and then dropping her home.

Kong also expressed her gratitude that she has a pair of good parents who sacrificed their dreams just to fulfill hers; they once hoped that their daughter could have a "peaceful and stable" job, but after she got into university, they supported her wholeheartedly to take up the path to become a full-time fencing athlete.

Classmates praised Kong for being modest, kind, and grateful.

Kong was enrolled in an international school since she was a child and learned many interests. She is good at all kinds of things, and when she grew up, she won many medals, however, there is no sign of superiority and arrogance in her, but rather she is humble and thankful.

Some of her classmates who had been trained in the same fencing school as her praised her, saying that she was a very friendly and kind person as early as in her secondary school days.
