1-minute News | How to protect yourself when meeting a wild boar?
Wild boars are common and widely distributed indigenous mammals in Hong Kong. Adult individuals can weigh up to 200 kilograms and grow up to 2 meters long. They are prevalent in various areas of Hong Kong including Tai Wai, North Point, Sai Kung, and Tseung Kwan O.
Wild boars are powerful with strong biting capabilities. Their two pairs of tusks can easily snap tree branches and animal bones. They have thick fur and strong defensive abilities, capable of running at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour, equivalent to 11 meters per second.
If you come face to face with a wild boar, remain calm and remember the "Four Don'ts":
- Don't run
- Don't scream
- Don't attack
- Don't chase
Under normal circumstances where they are not startled or threatened, wild boars generally do not attack humans. When facing a wild boar, slowly back away, maintaining eye contact. Once you are about 30 meters away, you can quickly leave. Wild boars often charge in a straight line when attacking. If you perceive an attack, try to retreat quickly in an S-shaped path.
Remember, playing dead is ineffective! If a wild boar feels threatened, its aggression towards humans can be strong, even attacking individuals lying on the ground.
