Attention! Seoul experiences record-breaking heavy snowfall, with 72 flights canceled and 105 delayed
Seoul, South Korea, experienced a record-breaking heavy snowfall last night (Nov. 26), with a snow depth reaching 16.5 centimeters, which marks a new record for the past 117 years. The heavy snow affected flights across the country. As of 1 p.m. today (Nov. 27), 72 flights had been canceled and 105 delayed.
Korea Meteorological Administration measured the deepest snow at 16.5 centimeters this morning (Nov. 27). The previous record for the deepest single-day snowfall in November was 12.4 centimeters on November 28, 1972. The all-time highest record, not limited to November, is 31 centimeters recorded on March 24, 1922.
Data indicate that the rare heavy snowfall in Seoul is due to a cut-off low located in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, which contains very cold Arctic air. Cold air blowing in from the northwest passes over the relatively warm Yellow Sea (referred to as the West Sea in the Korean Peninsula), creating snow clouds due to the temperature difference. This is also the reason for frequent heavy snow in South Chungcheong Province and Honam from November to January each year.
