Tropical cyclone Man-yi approached Hong Kong last night (Nov. 18), and with the combined effects of the astronomical tide and the northeast monsoon, several low-lying coastal areas experienced flooding. In places like Tai O and Sha Tau Kok, pedestrians had to wade through water, and residents in Sha Tau Kok even reported seeing water snakes and fish on land.
Additionally, areas such as Lei Yue Mun and the Shing Mun River experienced seawater backflow.
This morning (Nov. 19), the Drainage Services Department reported on social media that the maximum flooding depth in Tai O, Lei Yue Mun, and Sha Tau Kok reached about 300 millimeters, while the highest flooding depth along the Shing Mun River was approximately 500 millimeters. These water levels were consistent with earlier predictions from the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO).
According to the latest assessment from HKO, the highest water levels have passed, and the flooding observed earlier in lower-lying areas is gradually receding.
