HKO: T1 Signal to remain in effect until at least 6 pm
The Hong Kong Observatory has announced that the Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in effect until at least 6 p.m. today (Nov. 18). Based on current forecasts, Tropical Cyclone Man-yi will stay more than 400 kilometers away from HK throughout the day, and strong winds generally over the territory are not expected during the day.
According to the Observatory, with Man-yi edging closer to the coast of southern China and under the combined effect with the northeast monsoon, winds will strengthen gradually over the coast of Guangdong tomorrow (Nov. 19).
HKO also warned that there would be a spring tide today and tomorrow. With the combined effect of the northeast monsoon and Man-yi, the sea level will be particularly high overnight during the high tide. In Victoria Harbour, sea levels are forecasted to rise to approximately 3 meters above chart datum tonight through early tomorrow morning, while Tai O may experience levels up to 3.3 meters above chart datum. Minor flooding in low-lying coastal areas is possible.
The Observatory will monitor the storm's proximity to the Pearl River Estuary, its weakening trend, and local wind conditions to evaluate whether the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 needs to be issued between tonight and early tomorrow.
