Standby Signal No. 1 to remain in force at least until 10 pm: HKO
The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) announced today (Nov. 19) that strong northerly winds are expected offshore and in high-ground areas due to the combined effects of tropical cyclone Man-yi and the northeast monsoon. The Standby Signal No. 1 will remain effective until 10 pm tonight.
The Observatory noted that Man-yi has continued to move westward across the northern South China Sea in the past few hours and has weakened. The cyclone is closest to Hong Kong, about 400 kilometers south of the city. Associated rainbands are affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong, and more frequent rainfall is expected in Hong Kong today.
Affected by the astronomical tide, the northeast monsoon, and Man-yi, HKO predicts that water levels along the coast of Hong Kong will rise higher than usual between 10 pm and midnight. The sea level in Victoria Harbour is expected to rise to nearly 3 meters above chart datum, while in Tai O, the water level may reach about 3.1 meters above chart datum. Some low-lying coastal areas may experience minor flooding.
