Guardian quits X platform, citing 'disturbing content' with racism and conspiracy theories
The British newspaper The Guardian announced on Wednesday (Nov. 13) that it will no longer post on the social media platform X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, due to "disturbing content" prevalent on the site, including racism and conspiracy theories.
The Guardian, which has 10.7 million followers on X, is the first major British media outlet to leave the platform.
In an editorial published on its website, The Guardian said, "This is something we have been considering for a while given the often disturbing content promoted or found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism." Musk, in response to The Guardian's departure, posted on X and said, "They are irrelevant."
On the same day, former CNN anchor Don Lemon also announced his departure from X, believing that the platform no longer serves the purpose of being a place for "honest debate and discussion, transparency and free speech."
Musk acquired Twitter in 2022 and later rebranded it as X. Critics have pointed out that Musk's laissez-faire approach has allowed misinformation and hate speech to spread unchecked.
