Cheung Sha Wan Station escalator accident: Man loses balance, causing four injuries

An escalator accident occurred at Cheung Sha Wan Station. Around 10 p.m. last night (Nov. 13), a man lost his balance and fell down on an escalator connecting the concourse and platform at Cheung Sha Wan Station, crashing into three female passengers behind him. All four were injured. Ambulancemen arrived on the scene to treat the injured. The police have classified the incident as "accidental injury".

After the incident, MTR staff rushed to assess the situation, suspended the escalator's operation, cordoned off the area, and reported for assistance. Fortunately, all four injured individuals were conscious, suffering from abrasions or sprained backs. After initial bandaging by rescue personnel, they were transported to the hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

In the first nine months of this year, there have been 430 escalator accidents within the MTR network. Approximately 60% of these incidents were due to passengers not holding onto the handrail, losing balance while walking on the escalator, being bumped by others, or issues related to carrying large items.

To remind passengers to use escalators safely, the MTR has recently arranged for safety ambassadors wearing red vests at various stations. They remind passengers to hold onto the handrail, stand firmly on both sides and refrain from walking to reduce the likelihood of accidents.
