Caricature: Legalized jaywalking
According to Newsweek, the New York City Council passed legislation to allow pedestrians to cross the street outside of crosswalks or against traffic lights.
Since Mayor Eric Adams neither signed nor vetoed the legislation within 30 days, the legislation has officially become law, and jaywalking is now legally permitted.
However, the law also warns that pedestrians must yield the right of way to vehicles with priority. Since 1958, jaywalking had been prohibited in New York City, with violators facing fines of up to US$250 (about HK$1943).
