CIIE marks China's commitment to expanded global cooperation
The 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) opened today (Nov. 5) in Shanghai, with Premier Li Qiang delivering a keynote speech.
Li emphasized that hosting the CIIE is a significant measure of China's commitment to openness and cooperation with the world. He stated that if the first CIIE were a one-way invitation from China to the world, each subsequent expo would have been a mutual commitment to collaboration.
Since its inception in 2018, the CIIE has been held annually, with the previous six expos generating over US$420 billion in intended deals. This year's event has seen participation from 152 countries, regions, and international organizations, with around 3,500 foreign companies attending. Among them are 297 Fortune 500 companies and industry leaders, setting a new record.
Li highlighted the accelerated changes in today's world, where unilateralism and protectionism are rising and instability is increasing. However, China is more determined than ever to maintain, expand, and enhance its openness to foster lasting peace and stability.
Li further stated that China aims to build consensus through steadfast commitments, noting that China has always delivered on its promises. This includes reducing China's tariff levels to 7.3% and fully implementing all the openness measures announced at previous CIIEs. China seeks to expand its openness through mutually beneficial cooperation, moving away from zero-sum and winner-takes-all mentalities.
Li emphasized that China is willing to open its markets further, implement more unilateral openness measures, and expand orderly access to sectors such as telecommunications, the internet, education, culture, and healthcare. China will also continue its unilateral visa exemption policy and maintain the successful hosting of the CIIE and other major exhibitions.
