Caricature: Hell on Earth
On Monday, Oct. 28, the Israeli parliament passed two bills designating the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as a terrorist organization, effectively banning its operations within the country.
Experts warn that if the ban is enforced, it could severely impact humanitarian efforts in Gaza, potentially worsening the already dire situation.
Israel has long claimed that some UNRWA staff in Gaza have ties to terrorist groups, but a UN independent panel released a report in April stating that Israel had provided no evidence to substantiate these claims.
According to CNN, prior to the parliamentary vote, the US Department of State urged Israel not to pass the legislation, emphasizing that UNRWA currently plays an irreplaceable role in Gaza.
