Domestic violence criminal cases decline by 8% in HK compared with 2023
During a Legislative Council meeting, a member of the Legislative Council, Lillian Kwok, raised questions regarding domestic violence to the Secretary for Labor and Welfare, Chris Sun. In a written response, Sun emphasized the government's concern for domestic violence, noting that the Social Welfare Department followed up on 1,928 cases of abused spouses or cohabitants and 1,457 child protection cases in 2023.
As of September this year, the police handled 877 domestic violence criminal cases, down approximately 8% from 943 cases in the same period last year. Miscellaneous domestic violence cases were 298, down about 21% from 362 last year, and domestic incidents totaled 5,604 cases, also a slight decrease from 5,792 last year. The police refer cases to the Social Welfare Department for follow-up, where necessary, with the consent of the involved parties.
Sun stated that the police take domestic violence seriously and have clear professional guidelines for categorizing and handling such cases. The police have established effective policies and procedures to promptly address all reports of domestic violence, take appropriate law enforcement actions, and ensure the immediate safety of victims and their children to prevent further harm.
The Social Welfare Department also funds various service units to provide prevention, support, and specialized services for victims of domestic violence. These include Integrated Family Service Centers, Family and Child Protective Services Units, and Clinical Psychological Services Units. The department will also use TV, radio, social media, and community educational activities to enhance public knowledge and awareness of domestic violence prevention.
