Google plans to launch Gemini 2.0 in Dec

Google is set to release its next-generation AI model, Gemini 2.0, in December. (Reuters)

According to a report by The Vergeon on Oct. 26, Google is set to release its next-generation AI model, Gemini 2.0, in December. This launch is expected to coincide with OpenAI's release of its upcoming flagship model.

The report says that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans a phased rollout of the model following GPT-4, initially launching it with select commercial partners, while Google is gearing up for a broader release of Gemini 2.0 from the outset.

However, sources indicate that the new Gemini model has not shown the performance improvements that the team, led by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, had hoped for. Specific details regarding the new features of Gemini 2.0 have yet to be disclosed.

Interestingly, the news of Google's December launch comes just a day after reports surfaced that OpenAI is also planning to release its next-generation model, code-named "Orion", before December. Although OpenAI has denied this, it is expected that Orion won't be widely released through ChatGPT initially.

As OpenAI and Google continue to compete, other companies, such as xAI, Meta, and Anthropic, are also racing to release their own next-generation AI models.
