Caricature: Face-swap scams
Hong Kong police have arrested 27 people for allegedly carrying out romance scams using deepfake face-swapping technology in a Hung Hom industrial building.
This local crime syndicate, controlled by organized crime, ran a large-scale cross-border scam center in a 4,000-square-foot unit.
The group trained its members with various scam scripts and provided technical support, including using AI deepfake technology to engage victims in video chats. The scam would typically start with an online romance, gradually luring victims into investing in fake cryptocurrency schemes, ultimately defrauding them of large sums of money.
Police have uncovered cases involving male victims from different regions who were tricked through video chats using deepfake AI technology. The scammers would alter their appearance and voice to look and sound like highly attractive women, leading the victims to believe they were genuinely in a romantic relationship with a desirable partner. The victims were then persuaded to invest online.
The scam group would even show forged profit records to the victims, only for them to realize they had been deceived when they couldn't withdraw their principal or "profits."
