Govt to conduct drills and develop contingency plans for emergencies in Kai Tak Sports Park
The Kai Tak Sports Park is expected to open in the first quarter of next year, with the 2024 Hong Kong Sevens scheduled for March and a performance by the British band Coldplay in April.
During a radio program concerning the policy address today (Oct. 17), Chief Executive John Lee stated that the Kai Tak Sports Park represents an opportunity and highlight for Hong Kong. However, a venue that can accommodate 50,000 people poses a significant challenge for the government, which is responsible for ensuring design, facilities, promotion, and resource utilization.
Regarding event arrangements, Lee indicated that the government will definitely engage in the planning, as it will impact the development of Hong Kong. He added that the contractors and the catering businesses operating within the venue also share the responsibility to promote the development of the Sports Park.
He also mentioned that the government has established a dedicated team to handle issues related to the sports park and has repeatedly discussed transportation arrangements.
Lee believes that the venue users will likely be tourists, who are generally unfamiliar with the site. Therefore, he emphasized the need to enhance safety measures. The authorities will also conduct drills and develop contingency plans for various emergencies.
