HK as cultural exchange hub: Insights from Kenneth Fok on Performing Arts Expo
Kenneth Fok Kai-kong, Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, recently shared his insights into the inaugural Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo during a joint interview with Mainland and Hong Kong media. He emphasized the event's significance and potential to reshape Hong Kong's cultural landscape.
Enhancing Cultural Confidence and Inclusivity
One of the key goals of the Performing Arts Expo is to broaden the audience base and foster cultural confidence among Hong Kong residents. Fok explained that the event aims to engage art enthusiasts and people who may not typically experience the performing arts.
"We want to introduce a global perspective and new experiences," Fok said. "For example, we're combining traditional Cantonese Nanyin music with jazz and collaborating with South African artists to enrich Hong Kong's cultural ecosystem."
Standing Out on the Global Stage
When asked how the Expo can distinguish itself from other international arts festivals, Fok highlighted Hong Kong's unique role as a Cultural Exchange Hub, a position outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan. He noted that this designation brings immense opportunities.
"We've learned from successful models in Canada and South Korea and studied art expos in Australia. However, Hong Kong's unique advantages, like its world-class cuisine and excellent transport links, will help attract global attention," Fok added.
A Platform for Public and Industry Engagement
Fok stressed that the Expo is a platform for industry professionals and a space for the public to experience world-class performances. "The challenge is to avoid simply repeating past content," Fok said. "We are working closely with top international artists and teams to offer fresh and exciting performances to the audience."
He also emphasized the importance of a strategic communication plan to ensure the event has a lasting impact on both the local and international art scene.
Hong Kong's Growing International Cultural Presence
Fok is confident that Hong Kong is securing its place in the international cultural arena. "Hong Kong already has strong appeal and a good global reputation," he remarked. "This Expo is an unprecedented opportunity to showcase Hong Kong's artistic achievements in just five days, strengthening the city's cultural brand."
Turning Art into Economic Value
Fok also touched on the economic value of the arts, noting that cultural events can significantly boost the local economy. "The Hong Kong government has invested heavily in the arts, and when art contributes to GDP growth, it attracts more commercial investment," he explained.
A New Era of Cultural Development
Reflecting on his two years as Chairman of the Arts Development Council, Fok highlighted the opportunities brought about by increased international collaboration and integration with Mainland China. "We now have programs like the Arts Administration Internship Scheme, and the Council has its own dedicated building—these are invaluable resources for the arts community," Fok said.
In closing, he mentioned his deep involvement in planning the Expo, attending nearly every event. "I feel a responsibility to tell Hong Kong's story well," Fok said. "Earlier this year, the Hong Kong government visited the Middle East as part of the Belt and Road Initiative. We've invited Middle Eastern artists to this Expo, hoping to foster deeper cooperation through the arts."
