Hanlu arrives, signifying shift to colder weather
Today (Oct. 8) at 3:00 am, the Cold Dew solar term arrived.
Hanlu, or Cold Dew, one of China's 24 solar terms, heralds the arrival of cold weather in late autumn.
There are notable variations in temperature between day and night following the Cold Dew as sunlight decreases, warmth progressively fades, and chill sets in. Deep autumn has a hint of melancholy in contrast to summer's vibrancy.
Cold dew is also the season of harvest, bringing people the joy of a good yield as all kinds of crops ripen in droves.
Frost- and cold-hardy, chrysanthemums are breathtakingly beautiful when they bloom in late autumn.
Since the Double Ninth Festival (Chongyang Festival, the ninth day of the ninth lunar month) often falls on a cold dew, people commemorate the festival by climbing high and enjoying chrysanthemums. Over time, it has become one of the customs of Cold Dew.
