Number of fatal bicycle accidents doubles, rising from four last year to eight this year
Commissioner of Police Siu Chak-yee stated today (Oct. 6) at an event that the total number of casualties from bicycle accidents in the first eight months of this year was 1,105, a decrease of 7% compared to the same period last year. However, the number of fatal cases has doubled, rising from four last year to eight this year. Among the deceased, six were not wearing helmets. The police will actively cooperate with the Transport Department to legislate for the mandatory wearing of bicycle helmets.
He noted that fatal traffic accidents are mainly attributed to distracted driving, for example, failure to properly observe road conditions and neglecting vehicle blind spots (especially those large and tall vehicles).
Siu also mentioned that the total number of casualties from traffic accidents in the first eight months of this year was 14,679, a slight decrease of 1% compared to the same period last year. Among these, 535 were fatal or resulted in serious injuries, representing a reduction of about 39% compared to last year. In fatal traffic accidents, pedestrians accounted for the majority of deaths, with nearly 60% being elderly individuals.
