Tanya Chan Suk-chong, a former Hong Kong legislator who was sentenced for her involvement in the illegal 2014 "Occupy Central" movement but granted a suspended sentence, has been living in Taiwan for three years. She recently announced on social media that she has become the head chef of the restaurant "Red Cotton", describing the achievement as an "unbelievable miracle."

However, the news has drawn ridicule from some netizens, with comments like "she's really scraping the bottom of the barrel," and "her best dish is stirring up trouble."

According to Chan, she opened the restaurant because she found herself living alone and missing the flavors of HK food after moving to Taiwan. Her friend, Mrs Yip, whose husband is Danny Yip, the founder of HK's renowned "The Chairman" restaurant, encouraged her to cook and open a restaurant herself.

The restaurant is currently in the final stages of preparation, with the team familiarizing themselves with the kitchen and conducting final tastings before the official opening.

Tanya Chan was convicted of "incitement to commit public nuisance" and "incitement to incite public nuisance" for her role in the 2014 "Occupy Central" protests. She was sentenced to eight months in prison but received a two-year suspension.

Following her conviction, the Hong Kong Bar Association issued a notice stating that the Bar's disciplinary tribunal had found her actions could damage the reputation of the legal profession. As a result, Chan was formally reprimanded and ordered to pay HK$140,000 in legal costs to the Bar Association.
