35 abandoned cats found in Sai Kung in 3 days
Over 35 cats, including several pedigree breeds, were discovered abandoned in various locations around Sai Kung over the past three days, according to the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
In a social media post today (Sept. 27), the SPCA revealed that it had received anonymous calls on three consecutive nights, alerting them to abandoned cats in the Sai Kung area.
SPCA inspectors rescued 14 cats on Sept. 24, 13 on Sept. 25, and a further 8 on Sept. 26, bringing the total to 35 over the three-day period. The abandoned cats include both local and pedigree breeds, such as domestic shorthairs, British Shorthairs, Scottish Folds, Chinchilla cats, leopard cats, Siamese cats, Abyssinian cats, Devon Rex, and Maine Coons.
The SPCA is currently caring for 27 of the cats, while the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has taken away 8 cats.
Despite many of the cats suffering from ringworm and flu, a veterinary examination has confirmed that their conditions are now stable. The SPCA believes the cats had previous owners, as they exhibit friendly and trusting behavior toward humans.
The SPCA has reported the case to the police and encouraged anyone with information to contact them via their hotline at 27111000.
