Kevin Yeung: Kai Tak Sports Park to open as scheduled, sports commissioner to be appointed shortly
New World Development announce on Thursday (Sept. 26) that it is negotiating with its major shareholder Chow Tai Fook Enterprises to sell its shareholding in Kai Tak Sports Park Limited to the other party.
The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kevin Yeung, said that the authorities had received a formal application from New World Development and will decide whether or not to approve the change of ownership based on the contract, and consider whether it will have any impact on the future operation and plans, with the general principle being that it will not affect the opening and operation of the Kai Tak Sports Park.
He said that the construction works of the Kai Tak Sports Park has entered the final stage and he was confident that the Sports Park will be completed by the end of the year as scheduled and open in the first quarter of next year, bringing spectacular performances and sports competitions to Hong Kong.
Separately, the Commissioner for Sports, Sam Wong, resigned earlier for personal reasons. Yeung said that due to time constraints, civil servants will be appointed to take up the duties of the Commissioner for Sports shortly.
He pointed out that the position of the Sports Commissioner is important and there has been a lot of sports-related work in the recent past.
He also added that as the open recruitment will take a longer time, the Bureau is discussing with the Civil Service Bureau to identify a civil servant who is familiar with public policies and government operations to implement sports work as soon as possible.
