Govt to hold panda naming contest in October
The Chief Executive, John Lee, said in a press conference before attending the Executive Council meeting today (Sept. 24) that a publicity and promotional program will be launched to welcome the giant pandas presented to Hong Kong by the Central Government, including local naming competitions, drawing competitions and drone shows.
Lee said that the Government will organize a naming competition in October, inviting all Hong Kong people to come up with new names that are meaningful and in line with the characteristics of the two pandas.
In addition, the Cultural, Sports and Tourism Bureau will organize a large-scale panda painting competition, inviting the public to depict the cute and cuddly side of the giant pandas, according to Lee.
Lee said that apart from the above two competitions, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will also incorporate panda elements into its Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival this month, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB)'s drone show, and the National Day special edition of A Symphony of Lights next month.
Lee added that the Kowloon West community, together with the Yau Tsim Mong, Sham Shui Po and Kowloon City District Offices, will launch a series of activities to welcome pandas at the beginning of each month. The Southern District, where Ocean Park is located, will also launch a campaign about pandas and the Hong Kong Tourism Board's Tourism Information Platform will launch a special giant panda webpage.
On other fronts, Lee said that apart from launching Giant Panda products, Ocean Park will also launch a website to update the progress of the arrival of Giant Pandas in Hong Kong. The Post Office will launch giant panda-themed stamps and postal products in December. Some large shopping malls have already launched giant panda decorations for the public to take photos, while the retail and catering industries are also launching giant panda-related products one after another. Lee encourages all sectors of the community to seize the opportunity to create business opportunities and promote consumption.
