Kanye adds extra show in Haikou this Saturday amid local economic boost
American rapper Kanye West held a world tour listening session on Sept. 15 in Haikou, drawing approximately 40,000 rap fans to Wuyuan River Stadium in a vibrant atmosphere.
Following this, the Haikou Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism announced on Sept. 16 that an additional performance would occur on Sept. 21 to continue the festivities. Details on ticket sales will be released soon.
Local tourism officials stated that the concert had successfully boosted Haikou's cultural and tourism consumption, promoting economic development and achieving widespread social effects.
Media reports indicate that accommodations in Haikou saw an average rental increase of over 40% year-on-year, with duty-free sales growing 4.5% annually and 21.5% quarterly. The listening session generated about RMB 51 million in ticket revenue, contributing to a total tourism income of RMB 373 million for Haikou.
On the night of the performance, 95% of attendees were from outside the island, mainly from Guangdong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Beijing, which accounted for 40% of the audience, attracting many international visitors as well. China Duty-Free Group's (01880. HK) stock price rose 4% in the morning trading session to RMB 41.2, up by RMB 1.6.
There were initial concerns that the concert might be affected by Typhoon Yagi, but thanks to concerted efforts, the venue was repaired in time for the concert to proceed as scheduled.
Known as "Kan Ye" in mainland China, West ignited the crowd by starting the concert with "I love you, Haikou," leading to an enthusiastic three-hour performance. Fans expressed that Kanye was genuine and meticulous, appreciating his dedication to his Chinese audience.
Local media highlighted that the Kanye listening session in Haikou was the first international-scale event successfully held since Hainan became a province, enhancing Haikou's image as a "City of Performances" and showcasing its cultural charm and urban quality to the world.
