Cantonese opera 'Princess Wencheng' to perform in HK in Oct
The Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theater's new historical production "Princess Wencheng" will be staged in Hong Kong this Oct. The performance is part of the fourth "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cultural and Arts Festival" and "Guangzhou Cultural Week." Both the singing and spoken parts will feature subtitles in Chinese and English.
The newly adapted Cantonese opera uses the historical narrative of Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty, who married into the Tibetan royal family. This adaptation reimagines Princess Wencheng not as a sorrowful figure of diplomatic marriage, but as intelligent, playful, and courageous. It portrays her commitment to her values, pursuit of ideals, and life choices, marking a new era in Han-Tibetan interactions.
