Shenzhen offers free public transportation for elderly Hongkongers
Hong Kong residents aged 60 and over can ride the metro and buses in Shenzhen for free upon presenting the relevant documents. Shenzhen has also introduced the Yinian Card Benefits (Yinian Card), which allows holders to enjoy free rides and entry to tourist attractions.

1. Free Metro Rides with Home Return Permit
Elderly residents of Hong Kong aged 60 or above can ride the metro in Shenzhen for free. They simply need to present their Home Return Permit at the manual channel inside the station gates for staff verification.
2. Free Bus Rides with Mainland Travel Permit
Elderly residents of Hong Kong aged 60 or above can ride buses in Shenzhen for free by presenting their Mainland Travel Permit to the card reader upon boarding.
3. Free Public Transport with Yinian Card
Holders of Shenzhen's Yinian Card can use the card to access metro stations through a dedicated lane without the need for manual document checks. For bus travel, the card is read by the onboard card reader, enabling free rides for seniors.
Arthur Cheung, an officer from the DAB Yuen Long Branch states that the Yinian Card also serves as a linked account for senior mobile payments.
Applicants can apply for the Yinian Card in three ways:
- Online self-service application: Elderly individuals or their family members can apply through various platforms like the "i Shenzhen" APP, "Shenzhen Civil Affairs" WeChat public account, "Shenzhen Elderly Care" WeChat public account, "Ping An Bank Shenzhen Branch" WeChat public account, "Ping An Pocket Bank" APP, and "ICBC WeChat QR code" among others. They can fill out the card application online and opt for home delivery.
- Branch appointment: Seniors can make an appointment and visit a cooperating bank branch (such as Ping An Bank, ICBC, China Construction Bank, etc.) to process their application.
- At-home appointment: For those who are bedridden or have mobility issues, they can arrange for a bank representative from a cooperating bank branch to visit their home for the card application.
