Sushiro HK customers spark debate over Sushi waste,'Is it okay to throw out rice?'
"Not eating rice on sushi" customers recently appeared at the Japanese chain conveyor sushi restaurant.
A netizen posted about an incident at a Sushiro in Sheung Wan, where they observed two men ordering multiple plates of sushi but only eating the fish and seafood toppings, leaving a pile of untouched rice that resembled a "small hill." The poster expressed their dissatisfaction with the wasteful behavior.
The poster uploaded photos to Threads, describing how the two men stacked nearly 30 sushi plates and piled the uneaten rice on top.
Some netizens criticized this wasteful behavior in the comments, while others defended the diners, arguing, "What's the problem if they paid for it?"
Those condemning the two diners called it "disrespectful," asking, "Why even order sushi?" and "If they just want sashimi, they shouldn't go to a sushi place with rice." They added, "People these days don't know what it means to cherish food," and suggested that with so many restaurants in Hong Kong, those who only want sashimi should avoid sushi places.
Some comments suggested that the restaurant should take action, stating, "If the restaurant doesn't specify that wasting food isn't allowed, it's hard for others to intervene."
It's worth noting that Sushiro has introduced mini sushi options to cater to customers with smaller appetites, with half the amount of rice compared to regular sushi. This is also why netizens believe the two men wasted food, saying, "Sushiro already offers small rice sushi orders, so why waste it?"
