Fatal stabbing in North Point | LegCo member calls for better monitoring of patients prone to violence
A stabbing incident occurred in Kam Ping Mansion, Kam Ping Street, North Point on the evening of Sept. 15. A man attempted to attack his wife and mother with a knife.
After the police arrived, he attempted to attack them with a knife. Then, he was shot and sent to the hospital, where he ultimately died.
It is reported that the man suffered from schizophrenia, a condition that may involve delusions or hallucinations and requires regular medication. He had previously assaulted his mother, causing her to suffer a fracture.
A psychiatrist stated that some patients may have little awareness of their condition and may not believe they have a problem. If treatment is delayed, recovery time will increase. With rapid changes in society, economy, and family, learning how to manage stress is crucial.
LegCo member Connie Lam So-wai pointed out that there have been a series of tragic incidents involving individuals with mental illnesses in Hong Kong. She questioned whether the measures proposed by the Advisory Committee on Mental Health last year to enhance patient support are sufficient.
She emphasized that public hospitals are responsible for monitoring patients with violent tendencies. Even if a patient is deemed fit to return to the community, they should be followed up on a case-by-case basis.
She urged the government to establish an inter-departmental collaboration mechanism to create a database for high-risk cases to address mental health issues. She hoped that the upcoming Policy Address will focus more on these matters.
