Today (Sept. 10) is the World Suicide Prevention Day. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention announces the latest suicide statistics and trends in Hong Kong.

The Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP) points out that the estimated suicide rate in Hong Kong for 2023 is 13.6, based on information from the Coroner's Court. This indicates that approximately 13.6 individuals out of every 100,000 commit suicide.

According to the Center, although the figure has dropped slightly from 13.7 in the previous year, it is still at a relatively high level.

The CSRP also points out that the suicide rates of different age groups fluctuated significantly in the past year, with a significant increase in the suicide rate of those aged below 15. Among this specific age group, the suicide rate of females increased from 0.5 to 4.2.

It estimates that the increase in the number of suicides is related to the inability of some young people to adapt to the campus and learning environment in the aftermath of the pandemic.

In addition, a higher suicide rate among those aged below 15 is found in Kwun Tong and Kowloon City. It is hoped that schools and communities will strengthen mental health education to enhance students' understanding of mental health.
