Netflix's series "Squid Game" has been embroiled in a plagiarism controversy.

Last Friday (Sept. 13), Indian director Soham Shah filed a lawsuit in a New York federal court, claiming "Squid Game" plagiarized his 2009 film "Luck," and is seeking damages from Netflix.

In response, Netflix issued a statement dismissing the allegations as baseless, reaffirming that "Squid Game" was originally created by director Hwang Dong-hyuk and that they will defend against the claims.

Soham Shah argues that "Squid Game" bears striking similarities to "Luck" in terms of plot and characters. His film tells the story of a group of desperate, debt-ridden individuals lured into participating in a series of competitive games for a large sum of money, only to later discover that losing the games results in death.

"Squid Game" was produced with a budget of US$21 million and has surpassed 1.65 billion hours watched in its first four weeks, remaining one of the highest-viewed shows to date. The sequel, "Squid Game 2," is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 26 this year.
