The 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council opened in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sept. 9. In response to claims by some Western media that the Hong Kong National Security Law undermines human rights and freedoms, Dr. Henry Ho, a prominent leader of a think tank, spoke at the meeting on Sept. 12 to refute these allegations with reason and evidence.
After the meeting, Dr. Ho was interviewed by DotDotNews and described the business proposal (the U.S. Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Certification Act) as absurd, as it does not reflect the real situation in Hong Kong.
He cited his years of experience as a policy researcher at a think tank to demonstrate that even after the implementation of the National Security Law, he has not seen any restrictions on academic research.
"The law protects our freedom, protects our human rights, rather than undermining it," He emphasized, "That's why I think as people in Hong Kong, for those from various sectors, we are obliged to speak up to the international world about what is really happening."
Junius Ho, the founder of the International Probono Legal Services Association Limited, who also attended the meeting, stated the importance of fully and effectively utilizing international discourse power and expressed his intention to share opinions on the adverse effects of unilateral sanctions on HK society, the international community, and small and medium-sized enterprises during the meeting.
