Watch This | Dr. Ho highlights progress in HK since implementation of NSL at UN Human Rights Council

In Geneva, Dr. Henry Ho, a prominent leader of a think tank, participated in the United Nations Human Rights Council Regular Session today (Sept. 12), where he shared his insights on the implications of the National Security Law in Hong Kong.

Dr. Ho addressed criticisms from Western media that the National Security Law has undermined human rights and freedoms. He posed a provocative question: "Can you imagine anywhere in the world having no national security law?" He pointed out that for over two decades, from 1997 to 2019, Hong Kong operated without such a law, which contributed to the violent riots of 2019—riots he described as significantly longer and more intense than recent disturbances in the UK.

Highlighting Hong Kong's commitment to common law and the rule of law, Dr. Ho emphasized that judges in the region adjudicate cases impartially, including those related to national security. He reassured that judges hold permanent positions and can only be removed under specific circumstances, ensuring judicial independence.

With the implementation of the National Security Law, Dr. Ho noted that Hong Kong has regained stability and is now focused on economic revival. He asserted that human rights are better protected, and individuals with diverse political views, ethnic backgrounds, or dialects are no longer subjected to attacks by rioters. He cited a 64% increase in tourist arrivals in the first half of this year and reported that over 140,000 overseas talents have chosen to relocate to Hong Kong.

In conclusion, Dr. Ho encouraged people to visit Hong Kong to experience its vibrancy firsthand, stating, "You may hear different views and opinions about Hong Kong."
