7,682 mn couples register for marriage in the mainland in 2023

The Ministry of Civil Affairs announced that 7,682 million couples registered for marriage in mainland China in 2023, an increase of 12.4% compared to 2022. This marks the first rise in the number of marriages in nearly a decade.

Experts indicate that the increase in 2023 may be due to the impact of the pandemic in 2022, which caused some people to postpone their marriages to 2023.

According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the marriage rate in 2023 is 5.4‰, an increase of 0.6 ‰ compared to the previous year. Among these marriages, the major age group is 25 to 29 years old (38%), followed by the age group of 20 to 24 (13.8%), and the age group of 30 to 34 (21.1%).
