CityU professor dies on MTR tracks at Kowloon Tong Station
At around noon yesterday, a man fell onto the tracks and was caught underneath a train at MTR Kowloon Tong Station, where he died at the scene.
Train service on the East Rail Line between Mongkok East and Tai Wai stations was suspended.
Police seized a suicide note at the scene and initially learned that the deceased, a 59-year-old man surnamed Li, was suspected to be upset due to emotional and work problems, and did not rule out any involvement in the incident.
Sources said the man who fell onto the tracks was Danny Li Hin-wa, a professor at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering of the City University of Hong Kong.
The source said the victim was suffering from depression and was undergoing treatment, and had recently told his wife that he was under pressure at work. At about 9:00 a.m. this morning, the victim left his home to go to work, and at 11:47 a.m., he used his Octopus to enter the MTR Kowloon Tong Station. At 12:35 p.m., he contacted his wife through communication software, claiming that he had left his wallet in the taxi and was at Kowloon Tong Station.
About two minutes later, a train entered the platform and the victim was suspected to have jumped from the platform and was rolled underneath the train. He was confirmed dead by the ambulance crew at the scene at 1:20 pm. Police officers carried out crowd control, examined CCTV footage at the scene, and found the above behavior of the victim and the content of his contact with his wife. After reviewing the body of the deceased and the conditions at the scene, the incident was believed to be non-suspicious.
A CityU spokesperson said the university was deeply saddened by the incident and expressed deep condolences to Professor Li's family. The University is now learning more about the incident and will contact the family to provide all possible assistance.
