People may face penalties for violating beach closures during typhoon
As Super Typhoon Yagi approaches Hong Kong, the Observatory will issue Typhoon Signal No. 8 at 6:20 PM today (Sept.5).
Following last year's extreme weather, the government announced four key strategies in May to address such events. These include urging citizens not to engage in risky activities during severe weather, with strict enforcement and prosecution for non-compliance.
Authorities can close beaches and parks if necessary, with fines of up to HK$2,000 and 14 days' imprisonment for violations. Enforcement will consider whether actions are intentional or uninformed, but repeated offenses will lead to legal action.
For transportation, MTR outdoor sections will halt under Signal No. 9 or higher. Trains running during the signal will continue to the nearest spacious or mall-connected stations for passenger safety.
The Airport Authority and Civil Aviation Department will activate contingency plans, potentially rescheduling flights and setting up temporary waiting areas for stranded passengers.
