Actions needed for HK to develop new quality productive forces: Zheng Yanxiong
This afternoon (September 2), the "Science and Technology + New Quality Productive Forces Summit 2024" was held, gathering over 300 esteemed guests, including renowned entrepreneurs, distinguished scientists, and scholars from research institutions.
The discussions focused on strengthening foundational research, promoting source innovation, breakthroughs in AI frontier technologies, and cultivating innovative talent.
Chief Executive John Lee and Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, Zheng Yanxiong, were among the attendees and delivered speeches.
In his remarks, Zheng emphasized that President Xi Jinping has clearly pointed out the necessity of leading industrial innovation through technological innovation and actively cultivating and developing new quality productive forces.
"This guidance is particularly significant for Hong Kong, which is already a developed economy pushing for high-quality development."
Zheng stated that the development of new quality productive forces must be led by technology.
According to Zheng, it is evident that Hong Kong is the most suitable place to develop new quality productive forces since Hong Kong is an information hub, a treasure trove of technology, an international financial center, and a world-class manufacturing center situated in the Greater Bay Area.
"The key to promoting the integration of technology and new quality productive forces also lies in talent. Hong Kong is home to five universities ranked among the world's top 100, 16 national key laboratories, over 40 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, more than 1,200 top scientists listed among the top 2% globally, and a large pool of specialized talent across various fields. This human resource competitiveness ranks second in Asia, representing a significant asset for developing new quality productivity."
He also emphasized that the critical factor in advancing new quality productivity is "actions."
"While discussing theories is important, taking action is even more crucial," he noted, "while external factors are unprecedentedly stimulating, it is essential that internal factors respond proactively to enable external factors to take effect through internal mechanisms."
