Race for excellence: Insights into HK's most competitive university programs

The Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) released its official election results on Aug. 7. Hence, DotDotNews reporters contacted several universities in Hong Kong to inquire about their admissions statistics, seeking to identify which programs attracted the highest-performing students and faced the fiercest competition.

HKU's International Business Program Scores Highest, Enrolling Over 30 Students

During an interview today with Bennett Yim Chi-kin, Director of Admissions and International Student Exchange at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), he revealed that the Bachelor of Business Administration (International Business and Global Management) had the highest entry scores, with over 30 students admitted.

HKUST Admits a "SuperChampian" with 7 Subjects Scoring 5**

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) admitted 1,676 Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) students through JUPAS this year, with nearly 99% being Band A applicants. The top three programs with the highest average scores across the best five subjects were Quantitative Finance (39.75), Bachelor of Business Administration (Global Business) (37.5), and International Research Enrichment (36.4).

HKUST also admitted 14 students who scored 5** in at least four subjects (including the extended parts of Mathematics, M1/M2) and met Citizenship and Social Development requirements. Among them was a "super champian" who achieved 5** in seven subjects (including M1/M2) and met Citizenship and Social Development requirements.

CityU Admits 1,600 Students Through JUPAS, with Over 100 Benefiting from Flexible Admission Arrangements

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) admitted approximately 1,600 students through JUPAS, with around 90% of them being Band A applicants. After the program re-selection process, the number of Band A applications to CityU increased by nearly 20% this year.

CityU has been offering flexible admission arrangements to JUPAS applicants for four years. If an applicant's DSE result in one of the core or elective subjects (excluding Citizenship and Social Development) is one level below the program's entry requirement, but their overall DSE score exceeds the program's median entry score from the previous year (based on the specific program's scoring method). They may still be admitted to their Band A program if they perform exceptionally. This year, over 100 applicants were admitted through these flexible arrangements.

PolyU Admits Over 2,000 JUPAS Students, with About 92% Being Band A Applicants

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) admitted 2,018 JUPAS students this year, with approximately 92% being Band A applicants. Overall, the university reported strong admissions results. The top three bachelor's programs with the highest average scores across the best five subjects were the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Radiography, Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Physiotherapy, and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Occupational Therapy.

BU's Medical Programs Score Highest, EdUHK Admits 904 Students

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) admitted nearly 1,100 students through JUPAS this year, with over 84% placing HKBU programs in their top three choices (Band A). The programs with the highest average admission scores were the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biomedical Science, with 46 students admitted through JUPAS. Meanwhile, the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) admitted approximately 904 DSE students this year, similar to last year's.
