The MTR announced that the use of inductive credit and debit cards for traveling on the Heavy Rail network (except Airport Express stations) will be extended to Mastercard and UnionPay with effect from this Saturday (Aug. 24). Passengers can use Mastercard and UnionPay cards in the same way as they currently use Visa cards.
UnionPay International said that with the expansion of the service, passengers can easily enter and exit the gates by tapping their UnionPay credit cards with flash payment function, or mobile phones or smart watches (including Apple Pay and Huawei Pay) with designated UnionPay credit cards bonded to them at the credit card readers on the gates labeled with a light blue sign. For the time being, this service is only available for adult tickets. Passengers can also use the same UnionPay card or payment device to travel in the first-class compartments of the East Rail Line.
UnionPay has also mentioned that it will launch fare promotions in the near future. In addition, the UnionPay App MTR QR Code was successfully launched in February 2022 and supports adult, concessionary and East Rail Line first-class tickets at the same time, meaning that all UnionPay mobile payment services can be used at designated MTR gates.
