Caricature: Homesickness
In recent years, the number of elderly Hong Kong residents whose children have emigrated overseas has increased. Many "left-behind elderly" are experiencing loneliness, leading to emotional issues and even suicidal tendencies.
A survey targeting these seniors revealed that over 20% of respondents showed signs of moderate to severe depression. They have significant needs for medical care, daily support, and community assistance, but only a few actively seek help.
Social welfare representatives are urging the Hong Kong SAR government and society to pay more attention to the left-behind elderly population. They call for proactively identifying high-risk families, establishing case management systems, and providing one-stop community support with ongoing follow-up for those in need.
