A ceremony to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the founding of Ta Kung Pao was held at 2 pm today (June 12) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, said she was delighted to attend the ceremony today.
According to Lam, Ta Kung Pao has been published in Tianjin for 120 years since its launch on June 17, 1902. It is the oldest Chinese-language newspaper in Hong Kong. It has played a positive role in the reunification of Hong Kong with the Motherland and in maintaining Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability. Hongkong Post will issue a stamp sheetlet with the theme "The 120th Anniversary of Ta Kung Pao" to commemorate the occasion.
Lam said that Ta Kung Pao is a newspaper with a long history, and it has followed the footsteps of history by adopting a model of integrating the development of newspapers and new media long ago. Lam indicated that no matter how times change, what remains unchanged is the function of newspapers and other media in gathering and extracting information for readers and viewers, analyzing, comparing, and commenting on their participation. This helps the public to understand the social situation and essential issues and promotes healthy discussion and social progress.
Lam is grateful to the Central Government for its two major initiatives, namely the enactment of the National Security Law and the improvement of the electoral system of the HKSAR, which have put Hong Kong back on the essential track of "one country, two systems".
In this hard-won stable environment, the role of the media is even more critical. Apart from using press freedom to monitor the government's administration, the media should also consciously protect national security. The media should abide by the law, take the initiative to convey information about national security to the community, and provide readers and viewers with accurate, comprehensive, and impartial information.
