Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday (Oct. 14) laid a basket of flowers at the statue of late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping at Lianhuashan Park in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province.

Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997), known as the chief architect of China's economic reform, opening-up and modernization, visited Guangdong in 1977. Three years later, Shenzhen became a special economic zone. As one of China's first special economic zones, Shenzhen has evolved from a tiny fishing village into a vast metropolis.
