Democrats have secured 218 seats in the US House of Representatives, crossing the threshold for a majority in the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Combined with the 53 seats they had previously won in the Senate, also giving them a majority, the party has officially wrested control of Congress from the Republicans.
According to Reuters, Democrats made gains or flipped seats in several traditionally Republican strongholds, including Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio and Iowa.
The report also projected that Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House, could become the next Speaker of the House. If elected, he would be the first African American to hold the position.
The US Congress consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. All 435 seats in the House are up for election, with representatives serving fixed two-year terms. Meanwhile, 35 of the Senate's 100 seats are also being contested. Senators serve six-year terms.
The midterm election results will determine whether Trump's Republican Party or the opposition Democrats control Congress, with implications for the president's ability to push forward his policy agenda.
