The Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2026 attracted a sell-out crowd at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium for the second consecutive day on Tuesday (Nov. 4), as Filipino star Alexandra Eala secured a straight-sets victory and top seed Sorana Cirstea survived a tough three-set battle to advance.
World No. 17 Eala defeated Australian lucky loser Emerson Jones 6-4, 6-3 in their first-round encounter. The 20-year-old Filipina made a strong start, racing to a 4-0 lead before Jones fought back. Eala regained control to seal the win in straight sets.
Eala, who claimed her maiden WTA title in Washington, DC, earlier this year, said she enjoyed the contest and praised the HK crowd for its warm welcome.
"There's a huge Filipino community here, and the HK people have been very, very hospitable towards me and my family, and all of the players really. It feels wonderful to be here," she said.
Top seed Cirstea of Romania also booked her place in the last 16 after edging Maria Timofeeva 7-6 (6), 1-6, 7-5 in a hard-fought match. The 36-year-old credited both her opponent's performance and the crowd's support for making the contest memorable. She will next face Mary Stoiana, who defeated Venus Williams in the previous round.
HK's Cody Wong Hong-yi also delivered a notable result in the women's doubles. Partnering Jiang Xinyu, Wong defeated the third-seeded pair of Ingrid Neel and Giuliana Olmos 6-4, 7-5. Wong, who has reached a career-high world No. 145 in doubles, said the pair combined well despite having had limited time to practise together.
Elsewhere, fifth seed Talia Gibson defeated Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova 7-6 (5), 6-1, while former world No. 2 Paula Badosa retired against lucky loser Elena Pridankina after losing the opening set 7-5. Qualifier Alexandra Shubladze also upset seventh seed Liudmila Samsonova 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
PHKTO Day Three will start with the Fernandez and Kenin blockbuster first round, followed by British No. 1 Katie Boulter, who will take on American Claire Liu for a place in the quarter-finals. Tournament No. 4 seed Maria Sakkari will kick-start the evening session (not before 6:30 pm) against Maya Joint, who beat her compatriot Maddison Inglis 7-5, 6-2 earlier today.
Legend Venus Williams will return to Victoria Park to team up with China's Xu Yifan to play Chinese Taipei pair Lee Ya-Hsin and Wu Fang-Hsien in a doubles first-round clash to complete Day Three's Order of Play.
The main draw of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2026 runs from Nov. 2 to 8 at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium. The WTA 250 tournament is an "M" Mark event, a designation awarded by the Major Sports Events Committee to major sporting events that help promote HK as Asia's sports event capital.
