Hong Kong's food safety authority has suspended the import of poultry meat and related products, including eggs, from Lolland Municipality in Denmark and Jackson County in Minnesota, the United States, following avian influenza outbreaks reported in the two areas.
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said it has instructed the trade to halt imports from the affected locations with immediate effect, citing the need to safeguard public health.
A CFS spokesperson said the decision was made after notifications from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) regarding outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza.
The CFS said it has contacted the Danish and US authorities about the incidents and will continue to closely monitor updates from the WOAH and relevant agencies on the situation.
