Hong Kong's Transport Department said more than 1,500 motorcyclists were injured or killed in traffic accidents in the first three quarters of 2026, including 15 deaths, a figure it said was higher than the same period last year.
In a social media post published on Oct. 25, 2026, the department urged motorcyclists to exercise extra caution, noting that motorcycles are narrower and offer less protection than other vehicles.
The department highlighted a range of safety tips, including wearing a compliant, properly fitted helmet and putting on long-sleeved tops and long pants in light colors, fluorescent materials, or reflective gear to improve visibility. It also reminded riders to secure any cargo properly.
On the road, riders were advised to keep headlights on at all times, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid weaving through traffic or making dangerous overtakes.
The department also urged riders to inspect their motorcycles before setting off, including brakes, lights, tire pressure, and tread depth, and to ensure essential equipment such as lights, mirrors, and the speedometer are functioning properly.
Riders were further reminded to watch for hazards such as uneven road surfaces, oil stains, mud and sand, and metal manhole covers. On wet or slippery roads, the department said riders should reduce speed and avoid hard braking or sudden steering maneuvers.
