Since the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) officially opened eight years ago, various cross-border policies have been progressively relaxed. According to data from the HZMB Border Checkpoint of the Zhuhai General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection, as of midnight on Oct. 22 this year, the number of passengers travelling between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau via the HZMB Zhuhai Highway Port has exceeded 125 million, with more than 26.45 million vehicle trips.
Cross-boundary inspection data shows that since the start of this year, the HZMB checkpoint has processed 25.4 million passenger trips, 2.5 times the figure for the same period in 2019. Total vehicle traffic through the port has exceeded 5.67 million trips, up more than 4% year-on-year. Of these, 3.3 million trips were made under the Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles and Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles schemes, accounting for 58% and serving as the main driver of continued growth in port traffic.
As of Oct. 22, more than 246,000 drivers and over 210,000 vehicles had completed border inspection registration under the two schemes. Since the policies were implemented in January and July 2023 respectively, the cumulative number of single-plate Hong Kong and Macau vehicles inspected at the checkpoint has exceeded 11.65 million trips.
Chen Faqiu, head of the HZMB Border Checkpoint, said that this year, boosted by policies such as departure tax refunds and consumption subsidies, Hong Kong and Macau residents have shown even greater enthusiasm for driving north via the bridge. He expects that for the full year of 2026, the total number of single-plate Hong Kong and Macau vehicles inspected will exceed 4 million trips for the first time, and total port vehicle traffic will surpass 7 million trips for the first time.
Convenient self-drive northbound conditions are attracting more and more Hong Kong and Macau residents to spend and shop, invest and start businesses, and settle down for retirement on the mainland. Data shows that in the whole of 2019, the checkpoint processed about 4.5 million passenger trips by Hong Kong and Macau residents, while so far in 2026, that figure has exceeded 15 million.
