Recently, the THE World University Rankings 2027 show that Hong Kong's higher education sector remains highly competitive: five universities stay in the global top 100, while HKBU, EdUHK and Lingnan University also rank among the global top 200, with the ranking gap among the eight publicly funded universities gradually narrowing.

Lingnan rose from the 301–350 band last year to 257th, up nearly 100 places—the largest rise among the eight. It also rose by 300, 226 and more than 120 places respectively in the 2026 ARWU, U.S. News and QS rankings, again the largest increase among the eight. This reflects Lingnan's new momentum from integrating AI, data science and technology education into its liberal arts foundation under "Liberal Arts + Technology" and "AI+".

In this episode of Lau Dialogues, Professor Lau Chi-pang will explain how Hong Kong's institutions should build on their own strengths and, through the Northern Metropolis, strengthen collaboration among teaching, research, talent and industry to promote Hong Kong as an international post-secondary education hub.
